Out with the old, in with the new...MATTRESS!

Have you or someone you know held on to their mattress for 15 years or more? I believe the number is probably much higher than we realize. But who wants to go out and buy a mattress?! This weekend my husband and I finally made the switch and updated the mattress in our guest bedroom. We also bought a new mattress for the in-law suite. Five years ago, it took us a week and 10 separate mattress store visits (yes, seriously) to find the perfect mattress for the master bedroom. However, this time around the process was considerably shortened due to COVID. Our journey went as follows..

Step One: Do your homework and set a budget

Buying a mattress is not cheap, so you want to research mattress reviews, test a few in person if you can, and know what you can afford. The good news is mattress companies are always having a sale...especially during holidays like 4th of July or Labor day. Also keep in mind you may need a new box spring, frame, or headboard too.

Step Two: Choose new mattress and coordinate shipment

You want to do this at least a couple weeks out so you have time to shop, check your calendar for possible delivery dates, and get rid of your current mattress or any other items in the room. Let's face it, getting rid of the old begins to feel empowering and you start looking for more quests/clutter to conquer, so give yourself the time you need.

Step Three: Shop for new comforter set and linens

This is my favorite part because I love to shop, of course! The HGTV in me immediately began to redecorate the space in my mind and on my Pinterest board. Ultimately, we went with my husband's choice: The Ralph Lauren Annalise Comforter Set. The set is also available at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Step Four: Remove the old mattress and box spring

Here comes the fun part. Imagine me and my husband carrying a bulky, old mattress down a flight of stairs, (rest), through the front door, down our driveway (rest), onto the sidewalk of our neighborhood and down to its final location (rest). I'm strapped up in wrist and elbow braces and he's sweating from head to toe. I definitely have a greater appreciation for movers!

Step Five: In with the new

I'm looking forward to when our mattresses arrive. Bringing the pieces together after all of our hard work will be rewarding in itself. REAL ESTATE TIP: If you are trying to sell your home, something as little as updating the bedding can go a long way.

Changing your mattress is necessary, but experiencing change is inevitable. It can be exciting, scary, daunting, or even fun. We won't always be able to plan or know what to expect, but asking for help along the way can make things easier. We've all experienced drastic changes this year, having to "out with the old, in with the new," our entire way of living. After much lamenting the way 2020 has gone, I did some research, created a new plan, envisioned the design of those results, removed my old way of thinking, and then yes, you guessed it... in with the new! Even with buying a home, the same sentiments apply. Asking a real estate agent to help you along the way will give you assurance that your goals can become a reality.
